The Mitacs Model
A simple but powerful approach
Mitacs supports business–academic research collaboration through paid placements for undergraduate to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
We work closely with post-secondary institutions to match students with partnering Canadian enterprises who co-fund the placements. This includes private sector businesses, not-for-profits, municipalities, and health-sector organizations.
Award values
There are multiple award values to support projects involving Mitacs program participants at different stages of education. Placements usually last four or six months and often involve multiple back-to-back placements for more complex projects undertaken by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Helping surgeons catch complications early
FluidAI Medical, an AI-powered medtech company, scaled through a long-term Mitacs R&D partnership. Our early support was critical for prototype development, R&D, clinical validation, and business expansion. This helped the company validate the technology and go on to improve patient outcomes across Canada.
Bridging the skills gap with AI on the factory floor
Bois Daaquam, an integrated forestry company, worked with a Mitacs intern to automate anomaly detection in an industrial planer, saving resources and simplifying onboarding. The solution uses AI and acoustic monitoring to detect problems in real time.
Scaling a precision agriculture platform into a sustainable business
CropMind offers an AI-driven crop monitoring platform for vineyards. A Mitacs program participant developed a growth strategy based on market research and analysis of the company’s external operating environment — helping define a path to financing and underpinning a new partnership.
Building brain assessment tools for medical and military use
Neron AI partnered with Mitacs to advance its brain assessment tools for medical and military use. Mitacs helped the company build innovation capacity, attract highly qualified talent, and connect with academic networks and applied research programs.
Analysing fields from space to predict crop yields
Enns Brothers, a Manitoba-based John Deere dealership, developed an AI tool that uses satellite images of farmland to predict crop yields. To realize the concept, the company partnered with agricultural risk company Agi3, Mitacs, and researchers at the University of Manitoba.
Tackling biomanufacturing’s biggest bottleneck
Virica Biotech accessed highly qualified academic talent through Mitacs to support early development of Virica.AI, an active learning platform that combines machine learning with experimental data to accelerate biomanufacturing optimization.

# Program details
**Please note:** The policies and terms that apply to Mitacs' Accelerate and Business Strategy Internship programs also apply to Mitacs AI Advantage. References to "Mitacs Accelerate" in the program details below should be understood to include Mitacs AI Advantage.
### Eligibility
**Academic supervisors**
- At universities, eligible supervisors are faculty who are eligible to hold Tri-Agency funds.
- At colleges, institutes, polytechnics, and cegeps, eligible supervisors are faculty or designated staff.
**Partner organizations**
**Partner organizations** can be for-profit corporations, not-for-profit corporations, hospitals, municipalities or Indigenous governments in Canada.
- For-profit partners are required to provide private-sector funds to Mitacs
- Private sector funds are funds that are not sourced from government aid. Government aid means grants, operating funds received from the government, etc., but does not include revenue from sales to the government as a customer.
- Other partners are encouraged to provide private-sector funds whenever possible.
- Eligibility can be confirmed with a [Mitacs Advisor.](https://www.mitacs.ca/about/mitacs-advisors/)
**Interns**
**An intern** can be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, international student with a student visa, or international postdoctoral fellow with a valid work permit. Interns must be 18 years old or over, and fall into one of the following categories:
- **Registered students and postdoctoral fellows** at Mitacs partner colleges and universities in Canada. Postdoctoral fellows are eligible if the date of graduation from a PhD program is less than five years to the start date of the project. Exceptions are available for extenuating circumstances such as parental leave or military service. Fellows must not have been employed full-time at the partner organization prior to applying.
- **Recent graduates** (must be within two years of graduation at the start of their project), and non-degree students (diploma, certificate, etc) are eligible at the academic institution’s discretion. (Any interested applicants should check with their institution to first determine whether they are able to support other types of university interns before drafting an application.)
- **Visiting students and researchers** at Canadian academic institutions who are completing a degree at a university abroad may also be eligible at the discretion of the Canadian institution.
- **How many internships can one intern do?**
- Post-secondary students are eligible for any number of internships at the discretion of their institution. Interns must be enrolled as a student at an eligible institution throughout the course of the internship and have time in their schedule to commit to the project.
- Postdoctoral fellows can do up to nine (9) four-month internships (up to three (3) years)
- Recent graduates can complete up to three (3) four-month internships within two years of their graduation date
- Interns may not participate in more than one internship at the same time.
Further, all parties must declare any potential [conflicts of interest](https://www.mitacs.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/2024-September-Mitacs-Conflict-of-Interest-Policy-for-Program-Participants-Web-Version.zip) upon application submission, including:
- An academic supervisor in a position of ownership, employment or influence over operations at the partner organization.
- An intern is in a position of ownership, employment or influence over operations at the partner organization.
- Programs participants with a close family relationship with each other, or with someone in a position of ownership employment or influence at the partner organization.
Interns may interact remotely with an international partner organization and/or travel to interact in person. Any travel must be in accordance with their Canadian academic institution’s policies.
### Application process
*Effective December 15, 2025, the Internship Unit (IU) cap for the Indigenous Pathways initiative will increase from 12 to 30 IUs per submission year for each Indigenous partner organization. This gives partners more flexibility when accessing talent to meet their research and development project needs. Please contact your Mitacs Advisor with questions or concerns.*

**How to apply**
Review the following information when you begin writing your proposal:
- Mitacs Responsible Conduct of Research Policy ( found on “[Mitacs Terms, Conditions & Policies](https://www.mitacs.ca/about/policies/)”, including information on eligible research)
- [Adjudication criteria](https://www.mitacs.ca/mitacs-supported-eligible-research-and-adjudication-criteria/)
- Writing Your Proposal guide (under “Application”)
- Mitacs’s other relevant policies (including Mitacs Indigenous Research Policy, Research Security Plan, etc), all findable on “[Mitacs Terms, Conditions & Policies](https://www.mitacs.ca/about/policies/)”.
**What happens next**
Your application will be peer reviewed, which will take approximately six to eight weeks. Proposals with multiple internships or that require revisions may take longer. Please note there is a chance your application will be returned with a request for revisions before it is approved.
Following submission, partner organizations will receive an invoice (refundable if not approved), so that the intern receives payment when the project begins. Please note this invoice may be received before application approval, and does not guarantee approval.
Once an outcome is available, Mitacs will contact all participants with the decision and applicable instructions.
Following formal approval and the receipt of the partner contribution, Mitacs forwards the Accelerate funds to the academic institution to administer the award.
**Please note no work should begin on a project until an Award Letter has been issued and funds have been distributed to the institution.**
### Administration
**Release of funds**
Mitacs invoices a partner organization upon submission of their Accelerate proposal. Upon receipt of the partner’s contribution, Mitacs forwards the research award to the Canadian academic institution.
No funds will be released to the academic institution until the invoice has been paid and the proposal is approved. Mitacs has no control over when funds are administered by the academic institution.
If you have questions about your Accelerate award after Mitacs has released funds, contact your academic institution’s Office of Research Services (or equivalent).
**Start and End Date Policy**
Projects must adhere to the [Start and End Date Policy](https://www.mitacs.ca/mitacs-accelerate-project-start-and-end-date-policy/).
Projects that exceed the limits stated in the policy will expire and be slated for cancellation. Participants who anticipate exceeding the limits should contact Mitacs with an explanation and request an adjustment to the project timeline.
**Intellectual property**
All Mitacs-funded projects must adhere to the [Mitacs Intellectual Property Policy](https://www.mitacs.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Mitacs-Intellectual-Property-Policy.pdf).

Note that these IP agreements may not apply to joint applications with other funding organizations.
**Ajudication**
All applications submitted to Mitacs undergo a rigorous review process to ensure the quality of proposals that receive Mitacs funding. For full details, please see the Accelerate section on our [Adjudication page](https://www.mitacs.ca/mitacs-supported-eligible-research-and-adjudication-criteria/).
### Responsibilities
The following steps outline the responsibilities of each Mitacs Accelerate participant before, during, and after their project. For projects with multiple internships, each intern is responsible for their individual steps.

****Interns****
**Before the internship**
- Confirm the internship start date with your professor and partner. Notify Mitacs if your start date changes.
- Develop a research plan with your professor and partner. Confirm intellectual property requirements with your academic institution.
- Read and follow the Accelerate [Participant Expectations](https://www.mitacs.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Mitacs_Participant_Expectations.zip).
- Ensure appropriate insurance coverage, as necessary.
- Start the internship only after funds have been forwarded to the academic institution.
**During the internship**
- Maintain student, postdoc or recent grad status at the academic institution for the duration of your internship.
- Interact with your partner organization and academic supervisor as described in your approved proposal.
- Follow through on any commitments outlined in the Mitacs project to the best of your ability
- Behave in a respectful and civil manner through your gestures, words, and relations with others throughout your program participants, and avoid any form of harassment, discrimination, or incivility.
- Be on time to work and dress appropriately for the work setting, virtually and in person
- Welcome constructive professional criticism and continually strive to improve your performance
- Adhere to relevant procedures of your academic institution and/or host organization.
- Share any concern with your academic supervisor and host organization if you experience ongoing issues with your project, and notify Mitacs of any corrective measures in a timely manner
- Meet all necessary travel requirements for your intended destination, including completing Mitacs’s pre-departure forms (if applicable)
**After the internship**
- Complete the Accelerate Intern Exit Survey. You will receive an email from Mitacs with the survey link shortly after you complete your internship.
- Once the exit survey is completed, interns will be able to access their certificate of completion on Mitacs EDGE. For questions please contact training@mitacs.ca.
- Add your Accelerate internship and Training courses to your CV and LinkedIn profile
- [Sign up for the newsletter](https://www.mitacs.ca/subscribe/) (optional). As a participant in a Mitacs program, you can receive exclusive updates on job postings, funding and research opportunities, courses, and more.
- Acknowledge all Mitacs-sponsored results, including work by professors, postdocs, other interns, and research associates with the following statement: “This work was supported by Mitacs through the Mitacs Accelerate program.”
**Academic Supervisors**
**Before the project**
- Develop a research plan with the intern(s) and partner. Confirm intellectual property requirements with your academic institution.
- Provide feedback to the intern(s) to improve the quality of the proposal.
- Ensure appropriate insurance coverage, as necessary.
- Confirm the internship start date with the intern(s).
- Start the internship only after funds have been forwarded to the Canadian academic institution.
**During the project**
- Take fiduciary responsibility for the Mitacs grant (Canadian university professors only).
- Provide ongoing direction and research support to the student prior to and during the research project.
- Update Mitacs as necessary of any changes to project scope or timeline.
- Supervise the intern(s) during their internship activities at the academic institution.
- Behave in a respectful and civil manner through your gestures, words, and relations with others throughout your program participants, and avoid any form of harassment, discrimination, or incivility.
- Adhere to relevant procedures and procedures of your academic institution.
**After the project**
- Complete an exit survey.
- Acknowledge Mitacs-funded results with the following: “This work was supported by Mitacs through the Mitacs Accelerate program.”
**Partner organizations**
**Before the project**
- Develop a research plan with the intern(s) and professor(s).
- Provide feedback to the intern(s) to improve the quality of the proposal.
- Confirm the project start date with the intern(s).
- Agree to protect and keep confidential intern(s)’s personal information with any third party, unless granted written permission by intern(s).
- Ensure appropriate insurance coverage, as necessary.
- Pay the contribution upon receipt of the Mitacs invoice. Please note that the financial contribution of organizations is subject to applicable Goods and Services Tax (GST), Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) and/or Quebec Sales Tax (QST) (Collectively the value added tax or VAT). Projects can only begin after Mitacs has received the partner payment and forwarded the Accelerate grant to the academic institution.
**During the project**
- Attend monthly status meetings and update Mitacs as necessary.
- Supervise the intern(s) during their on-site internship activities.
- Provide access to the project site for an in-person assessment at Mitacs’s request.
- Behave in a respectful and civil manner through your gestures, words, and relations with others throughout your program participants, and avoid any form of harassment, discrimination, or incivility.
- Adhere to all relevant policies and procedures of your organization.
- Do not tolerate any behavior that undermines the dignity, self-esteem, or productivity of any Mitacs interns, staff, facilitators or affiliated members. If such occurrence arises, you must speak out and report any behavior to your academic institution in accordance with its policies, and the Mitacs team responsible for your program.
- Strive to recognize and avoid biases, and give fair treatment to all participants, Mitacs and academic institution representations, host organization and academic supervisors, regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, or any protect ground established by the applicable Canadian human rights legislations
**After the project**
- Complete an exit survey.
- Acknowledge Mitacs-funded results with the following: “This work was supported by Mitacs through the Mitacs Accelerate program.”

# Frequently asked questions
### What is Mitacs AI Advantage?
Mitacs AI Advantage is part of Canada’s broader effort to help businesses of all sizes safely and effectively adopt artificial intelligence, improve productivity, build new products and services, and compete in a changing economy. Through AI Advantage, Mitacs will help translate Canada’s AI ambitions into practical results by connecting organizations with skilled student and postdoctoral talent through two streams: **ADOPT and AI+X**.
**ADOPT** supports organizations, particularly SMEs, that are moving from AI readiness to implementation. It helps businesses assess opportunities, build roadmaps, integrate AI into operations, and improve products, processes, productivity, and decision-making.
**AI+X** supports more advanced AI research and development projects that combine AI expertise with sector or domain expertise to solve real-world challenges and develop new knowledge, methods, products, or solutions.
Together, these streams will support 10,000 AI-related work placements for young Canadians over five years, helping organizations de-risk AI adoption, build internal capacity, and create stronger pathways from postsecondary talent to high-quality jobs in Canada.
The overall goal is to make AI adoption more accessible across sectors and regions so that Canadian businesses can work smarter, young people can gain hands-on AI experience, and the benefits of AI are felt broadly across the economy.
### How does Mitacs define eligible AI projects?
An eligible AI project must have as a central objective the development, adaptation, or deployment of artificial intelligence tools to address a defined business, operational, scientific, social, or technological challenge. Projects may involve the data, infrastructure, or cybersecurity work required to enable a defined AI adoption initiative.
### Will applications need to align with a specific research theme?
No. Applications will not require a specific research theme.
### What is the project duration and are there changes to project caps?
Projects will follow standard Accelerate and BSI guidelines. Projects may be up to five years in durations and there are no IU caps.
### Are ADOPT and AI+X competitive?
No. These are not competitive offerings. ADOPT and AI+X will remain open for up to five years.
### Will revisions be allowed?
Yes, we will follow standard review procedures with respect to allowing revision requests.
### Will AI+X projects be required to include a formal trio?
No. AI+X projects do not need to include a formal trio, but they may include one if it makes sense for the project. The key requirement is that the project team must possess **both** AI expertise AND sector domain expertise. These areas of expertise may be held by the same individual, team, or organization, as long as both are clearly demonstrated and relevant to the proposed project.
### Does Mitacs offer AI literacy skills training?
Mitacs is currently identifying a partner to support AI training. These courses will not be available at launch but will be offered once they have been developed.
### Can applicants submit an application with multiple interns?
Yes. As with Accelerate or BSI, applicants can include multiple interns in a single application.
### Will Mitacs allow projects to be submitted with TBDs?
Yes, projects can be submitted with TBD internships.
### Will exception request be considered for postdoctoral fellows who are more than five years beyond their PhD?
Yes. As for standard Accelerate, extensions to the five-year rule are available for parental or medical leave, military service, etc.
### How do I know if my project is eligible for Mitacs AI Advantage?
All projects submitted through AI Advantage must have AI as a core component of the project. If AI is central to achieving the project's objectives and drives a significant portion of the work, the project is likely a fit for AI Advantage.
When distinguishing between the two streams:
- **ADOPT** is intended for organizations moving from AI readiness to implementation. Projects typically focus on activities such as AI assessments, readiness evaluations, roadmap development, implementation planning, adoption, deployment, and optimization of AI solutions.
- **AI+X** is intended for more advanced AI research and development projects that apply AI to solve sector-specific challenges. These projects require both AI expertise and domain expertise and are focused on creating new knowledge, methods, products, or solutions.
Applicants should select the stream they believe best fits their project. In RAP, applicants will also identify the primary activities each intern will undertake, which helps Mitacs categorize and review projects appropriately.
### Are Indigenous Pathways included within ADOPT & AI+X?
Yes. Indigenous Pathways will be available within ADOPT and AI+X and will follow the standard Indigenous Pathways eligibility criteria.
As with all Mitacs programs, the following limits apply:
- There is a limit of 30 internship units per eligible partner, per submission year, for units with TBD or non-Indigenous interns.
- Any additional internship units beyond this limit will be funded at the standard cost.
- Partner organizations may submit multiple proposals; however, they cannot exceed the 30-internship unit limit within the same submission year.
- Internship units with Indigenous interns do not count toward the 30-internship unit limit.
### Are umbrella applications permitted under these offerings?
Yes. We intend to accept ADOPT and AI+X projects as Part 2s submitted under approved umbrellas. We also intend to allow umbrella holders to indicate an intent to include ADOPT and AI+X projects under new umbrellas, when they submit their intake form/draft their Part 1. Additional details to be confirmed.
### Will Accelerate Entrepreneur be eligible for this program?
Accelerate Entrepreneur will not be eligible for AI Advantage at launch. Accelerate Entrepreneur applicants working on AI projects are still welcome to access funding via standard Accelerate Entrepreneur. ### Are applications under the NSERC MOU eligible?
No, joint NSERC applications are not eligible for Mitacs AI Advantage.
