Eligibility requirements

All participants must adhere to the terms and conditions of the Mitacs Accelerate program in addition to meeting the following requirements.

The postdoctoral fellow must:

  • Be a postdoctoral fellow at a Canadian academic institution when the research project starts
  • Be within five years of PhD completion at the start of the project
  • Partner with an organization where they have never been a full-time employee

The partner organization must be able to allocate the following budget per year to the collaborative research project:

  • $30,000 (plus tax) for a $60,000 award
  • $37,500 (plus tax) for a $75,000 award

Frequently asked questions

The Mitacs Accelerate Industry Postdoc provides funding to postdoctoral fellows at Canadian institutions for applied research in partnership with a company, not-for-profit organization, municipality, or hospital. The goal is to support research partnerships that foster long-term collaboration between academia and industry or the community. 

Fellowships are structured in internship units (IUs) of four or six months. Two funding models are currently available: 

  • $60,000 per year: Our standard Accelerate rate for postdoctoral fellows, valued at $20,000 per IU.  
  • $75,000 per year: Enhanced, time-limited funding at $25,000 per four-month IU, with a required partner contribution of $12,500 plus tax. Available only until December 19, 2025. 

Both models are eligible for Indigenous Pathways. 

The $60,000 per year funding model is available all year round. 

The $75,000 per year funding model is a time-limited offer running from October 31, 2025, to December 19, 2025. 

The offer of $75,000 per year in research funding is not expected to be available after December 19, 2025. 

A similar offer could occur in the future based on program priorities and available funding.

Projects that have already started are not eligible for the time-limited funding model, since this offer wasn’t active at the time of application.

No. Because it isn’t permanent, the $75,000 per year funding model can’t be used in our joint initiative process with any of the Tri-Council organizations (e.g., the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada [NSERC]).

Providing up to $20,000 for internships lasting four or six months, our standard Accelerate program is a reliable source of additional funding for collaborative research projects. This program has the same partner contribution requirement of 50% of the award value (or 25% for Indigenous Pathways).
